No. On April 1, 2025 Alberta replaced Class 1 Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) with the Class 1 Learning Pathway: the Entry Program, the Core Learning Program, and the Competence Building Program. All Class Driving Academy delivers the current pathway.
The pathway is the 40-hour Entry Program, the 67-hour Core Learning Program, and 10–18 hours of Competence Building — plus an 8-hour Air Brake course if you don't already hold a Q endorsement. Most students complete it in 6–10 weeks depending on scheduling.
After Core Learning you take your road test and receive a provincially restricted Class 1 licence, valid for driving within Alberta only. Completing the Competence Building Program removes the restriction so you can drive interprovincially.
It is an alternative route for Class 2 or Class 3 licence holders with at least two years of experience driving vehicles with three or more axles. Your experience must be approved by the Government of Alberta before you register with us for the course.
If you don't already hold a Q endorsement, yes — Class 1 vehicles have air brakes. The 8-hour Air Brake course is taken alongside Core Learning, or you can take it standalone.

Class 1 lets you drive tractor-trailers (semis) — the full long-haul licence. Class 3 covers single vehicles with three or more axles, such as dump trucks and large delivery trucks. Class 3 has no mandatory curriculum, so training is tailored to your current skill level.
All in-cab and in-yard training is conducted one-on-one with your instructor. You get dedicated time behind the wheel on every session — not split between students.
